'Raise the Alarm' has been on my radar for a while, but I never actually got to listening to what this band has to offer other than the unbelievably catchy 'Commercial Breakdown'. While that single is one of best representations of their sound, and their post-punky, danceable sound has been done to death during and after the release of this album, I can't say I'm not pleased with this album. Instrumentally, the album is very catchy, and when they lower the distortion on their guitars, it's absolutely irresistible. And when they do go after a noiser, more distorted sound, the track kicks loads of ass.
Unfortunately, the vocalist doesn't really know how to sing. Often times, Craig sounds half awake and monotone, and it doesn't really fit the vibe of the track. He does a really great job on tracks like 'Commercial Breakdown' & 'My Army', but there's points where it brought down my enjoyment listening to the track. The mix is typical for an album released during this decade, it's decent and all the instruments don't sound like they're trying to overpower each other, but there are a few muddy areas here and there.
I will say the B-side is stronger than the A-side, 'Borders' and 'My Army' are tracks I'd frequently revisit. Overall, if you're into this dance-punk sound as much as I am and you like Craig's vocals, you'll likely have a really fun and great time listening to this album.
