'Torches' is a really solid indie pop album that brings me back to my early listening habits. It's immediately catchy with it's upbeat and energetic vibe, but those lyrics reveal a deeper and darker meaning behind those catchy hooks. It gives off a strange vibe which I find hard to describe, I'd dance to Pumped Up Kicks, until I'd remember the lyrics. However, ignoring the lyrics works, and it makes for back-to-back bangers. I wouldn't think I'd enjoy this record as much as I did, but it feels like drinking a fresh, cold bottle of water first thing in the morning.
Most of 'Torches' feels inspired from the mid-2000s indie scene, as I could hear a few splashes of dance-pop (Call It What You Want, I Would Do Anything For You) and new rave (Helena Beat, Houdini) here and there. The production is very polished, perfect for the radio, or being blasted through some Apple EarPods. I'm surprised I didn't check this out years ago, as I would've played tf out of this record. We all know what they all say, though; better late than never, right?
